Wellness Trainer Melody Chong Reveals Her Secrets to Natural Beauty
She’s known as ‘The Pescatarian Yogi‘ on Facebook and Instagram. For certified health coach Melody Chong, who supplements her vegetarian diet with fish and seafood, being healthy is about having balance in her mind, body, and soul. Having discovered the joys of exercising as an athlete in primary school, she still maintains an active lifestyle simply because it makes her feel good.
As a freelance public relations & marketing consultant, Melody combines both her passion for fitness and PR, focusing more health and wellness-related projects. The University of British Columbia graduate, who works out 4-5 times a week, regularly gives talks, workshops, tips and recommendations for wellness. Her clients range from celebrity athletes, dieticians, physiotherapists, to organic products, grocers, and healthy food delivery.
Can you tell us about your fitness regime?
Because I am fortunate enough to work on a freelance basis, I can plan my own time and my own targets.
After work, I always try to set aside time for my workouts – it could be yoga, or twice a week of high intensity cardio like crossfit, or circuit training.
I like to balance it out because I love high intensity stuff, but you need strength training and active recovery. If I’m too busy to go to any of these classes, I go for walks around my neighborhood, just to get some fresh air.
It’s really important to have a full-body workout – both high impact and low impact – to achieve functional movement. If I only do high intensity workouts, I’m not giving my body the balance, rest or mindfulness it needs.
Can you share with us your secrets to natural beauty?
Beauty comes from nutrition, lifestyle, and activity.
By lifestyle, I mean maintaining a balance and taking care of oneself, what we eat and what we do. The products that I use are natural and organic, and for soaps and shampoos I look for non-sulfates and non-parabens formulations. I like to try new products in the market that are organic, biodegradable and sustainable.
My philosophy when it comes to nutrition is balance. It’s important to have all the food groups in our meals. I don’t think you should cut out carbs or fats, especially good fats from avocado and olive oil.
As someone who is sporty and active, what are your tips for maintaining your feminine hygiene?
It’s important to wear comfortable clothing and to change your pads or underwear regularly. Sometimes we get so busy that we forget, but it’s always good to keep it fresh. I also use feminine wipes when I’m out for long periods of time.
Working out while I’m on my period is not an issue for me. I always make sure to have a fresh set of menstrual care items. I’ll still jog, do yoga and high intensity training while on heavy flow, because exercising gives me the feel-good hormones I need.
From your experience as a professional health coach and marketing consultant, what are some of the most talked about concerns or issues around health, wellness, sports, fitness and nutrition?
I’ve given talks on incorporating fitness into busy lifestyles, and I find most people just need a little push towards their health goals. It’s more about finding that inspiration and motivation and knowing how they can incorporate a healthy lifestyle in their routines and busy schedules. For example, for those who take the train to work, they could use the stairs instead of the escalators; those who take the bus can get off a stop earlier and walk the extra distance; even at home, household chores can be part of a workout.
Top world leaders and entrepreneurs like Barack Obama and Richard Branson also make time for physical activity, because they see the importance of it for productivity and efficiency. These are just some examples of people who are probably much busier than us, but they can actually squeeze in some physical activity and watch what they eat.
Can you give some practical advice on how we can incorporate the right kind of activity and diet?
You have to experiment with yourself in terms of finding the right nutrition, the right kind of activity for you body that makes you feel good and happy. Our bodies are amazing in that it can tell you what doesn’t work for your body by rejecting it physically or emotionally.
I‘m a pescatarian but I don‘t encourage everyone to be one, because some people need meat. For me, I feel good with this diet.
