The Balancing Act of Intimate Care and Why It Matters
It’s amazing the balancing act a woman has to perform each and every day – from maintaining a successful career to managing a household, from putting in huge efforts on the job to living a healthy lifestyle. Even in your intimate area, there’s a balancing act that’s constantly taking place. It’s pretty wonderful that your body is able to perform such a complex feat.
To explain this, we need to go back to school, revisit an old chemistry lesson and get reacquainted with pH. pH measures how acidic or alkaline something is. On a scale of 1 to 14, 1 is most acidic, 7 is neutral and 14 is most alkaline.
In its normal healthy state, the intimate area has a pH level of 3.5 to 4.5 – making it naturally acidic as it is below the neutral seven.
Maintaining the intimate area’s pH level can be tricky because of many things and it changes frequently throughout various stages of life. Factors that affect the balance include the following:
- Important life cycles where there are enormous hormonal upheavals such as puberty and onset of menopause
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Oral contraceptives
- Monthly periods
- Becoming sexually active
It’s pretty wonderful that your body is able to perform such a complex feat.
Health issues of the intimate area are often associated with an imbalance in the pH level. If healthy pH is thrown off balance due to one or a combination of factors mentioned above, the friendly bacteria that comprise the normal flora in your intimate area can reduce in number – allowing unhealthy organisms to thrive and cause unwanted feminine discomforts such as odour, discharge and itching.
If this persists, it can also lead to severe feminine care issues such as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections – reason enough to take better care of your intimate area going forward.
As long as you do what you can to help keep your intimate area healthy, it will continue to perform its fascinating balancing act.
